The Mellon Foundation, the largest funder of the arts and humanities in the US, champions social justice and empowers communities through creative expression. Pentagram's team, led by Eddie Opara, developed a dynamic visual identity that embodies the Foundation's mission and commitment to innovation.
Central to this identity is a metamorphic logomark that represents flexibility and adaptability. This symbol, shaped to reflect the gestures of the human hand, showcases the Foundation's nurturing qualities while allowing for material transformation. It can shift in form and colour, reinforcing the idea of a collective that is ever-evolving.
The identity's colour palette is equally adaptive, designed to complement various projects and mediums, whether rendered in textures, moulded in 3D, or animated. This versatility allows the logomark to evoke a range of artistic forms, from sculpture to dance, and establishes a vibrant visual language that stands out from conventional philanthropic branding.
Additionally, a sonic identity was created, inspired by the pioneering Black American composer Florence Price and her Symphony No. 1 in E Minor. This unique soundscape complements the visual identity, further enriching the Foundation’s storytelling and connection to its mission.
Through this comprehensive identity framework, the Mellon Foundation not only highlights its core values but also cultivates a strong relationship with the communities it serves, making the remarkable creativity of its grantees both visible and memorable.

Role
As part of the team at Pentagram, I worked on the rebrand for the Mellon Foundation, the largest funder of the arts and humanities in the US. The new identity was designed to reflect Mellon’s values of openness, adaptability, and leadership. I conceptualised the transformative and metamorphic qualities of the visual identity, designed key brand assets and guidelines, and developed the case study featured on the Pentagram site. The final identity includes a flexible “M” logomark that symbolises adaptability, paired with a contemporary serif wordmark, blending tradition with innovation.
